Geology

The geology map is a rough approximation of the underlying rock types within the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed. Geological formations were digitized from 1:24000 unrectified maps. There is, therefore, a relatively low degree of confidence placed in the location of the contacts. As a first-order approximation, however, the geology map serves to illustrate the different types of rock found within the watershed.

Note that much of the southern hills is composed of several varieties of limestone. There are fossil-bearing strata within the limestone, although the fossils are restricted to a small class of gastropods and other marine shellfish. The city of Tombstone has historically been a mining town, with copper and gold deposits found in the hills in the SW portion of the watershed. For the most part, however, the watershed is covered with a deep layer of Quaternary alluvium.
